Summary
Polarisers are simply a material medium, usually an anisotropic plastic and usually birefringent, which has the property of absorbing a large part of the energy of the electromagnetic wave that constitutes light in one direction, while remaining "transparent" in the other direction. These materials, such as polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), are normally used to make "Polaroid" lenses, where the molecules are aligned in long directional chains, blocking the oscillation of the electric field in that direction and thus preventing the passage of light.
